what would you ask?

I've been interviewing GA candidates for the past week, and there is one question that I have found particularly interesting. It reads, "You only have enough time to get to know a group of people. You can only ask them one question. What would you ask, and why?"

Some of the answers weren't too special, but there were two that stood out to me. The first was unique and interesting. She asked, "What kind of music do you listen to that you don't let anyone, including your friends, know about?" She thought this would allow people to drop the masks they wear in their day to day lives.

The second question was somewhat generic, but it still stood out. "What is your personal philosophy?"

So, I thought I would ask the people at JU:

"What kind of music do you listen to that you don't let anyone, including your friends, know about?"

"What is your personal philosophy?"

and

"If you could only ask one question, what would you ask?"

I must admit, my guilty musical pleasure is the female singer-songwriters, like Regina Spektor, Tori Amos and PJ Harvey. (And I just lost all my metal cred. )

I think you can like Tori Amos and keep your metal cred. She's pretty freaking awesome. As for the others...

As are the other two, but when you listen to that next to In Flames, Opeth, or Agalloch . . . there's a certain level of disparity. And people look at my music collection really funny.

You also like Anthony Stewart Head. I think that eliminates all metal cred.

Have you ever listened to Ghost of the Robot? They broke up eventually, but they were James Marsters' Band. They had a pretty good sound.

I've heard they're pretty good, but I haven't heard any of their stuff. I'll have to check it out . . .

A) I'm always embarrassed when Adrian comes home after being deployed or otherwise away and he sees what crap I've downloaded. Winning items include "Ain't It Funny" by JLO and Ja Rule, "Freak Me" by Silk (that one wasn't exactly my fault), and "Titanic: My Fart Will Go On". I try to tell him I download things on accident, but I don't think he believes me.

My ringtone is embarrassing when it goes off around responsible adults (APC's Judith..."It's not like you killed someone. It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side.")

Basically, I just focus on my family. I think if we all loved and provided for our own families and stayed connected and supportive, this world would be a better place.

C) I'll have to think about that one a little bit more.

As for the question, probably it would be

do you like dark chocolate or milk chocolate?

In my experience, people who like milk chocolate are less detail oriented. The dark chocolate fans of my acquaintance has a certain attention to detail that borders on the... retentive. I'm all ears for hearing about milk chocolate addicts who are as picky as the dark chocolate addicts. I think it's a screwy theory but so far it tests out for me.

Non-chocolate lovers-- okay. You can't convince me they are not pod people.

You will be assimilated.

The kind of music I listen to that only my readers would know about is that I listen to belly dancing music, music that is more often referred to I think as "World Music"??

The question Iwould love to ask people is "who do you love?"

My philosophy is "to thine ownself be true".

Embarassing music - 80's bop-she-bop dancy type music (think Lisa Lisa, Stacey Q, Nasty Boys by Janet, Miss Jackson if you're nasty, Paula Abdul), Backstreet Boys

My personal philosophy - you can't please everyone, so you gotta please yourself (thanks Mac Davis)kind of like Trudy's to thine own self be true but country

My question - what would you do if you know you couldn't fail? (okay so it's not really MY question but it's still the question I would ask so does that count?)

Ok, so I thought of a song I'm embarrassed about liking: "Rocky Mountain High" by John Denver - so uncool but I loved it and used to try to sing and play it on my 12-string.

Fun questions!

My answers:

1. Music - I think I have to steal Dr. Donald's answer and go with John Denver. A few of my friends would probably laugh their heads off at me loving songs like, Sunshine on my Shoulders, Rocky Mountain High and Annie's Song. Of course some of them might not even know who John Denver is.

2. Personal Philosophy - Never say never.

3. My one question: What can you proudly say that you have never done?

Classical symphony. I find it extremely relaxing.

"What is your personal philosophy?"

It's somewhat fivefold:

1. Keep it simple

2. Mind your own business

3. Do NOT give unsolicited advice

4. Avoid resentment

5. be prepared (I learned that from boy scouts)

Of course I fail at these constantly, however.

"If you could only ask one question, what would you ask?"

Paper or plastic? yeah, that's it. Someday I wanna retire and drive a school bus (for the insurance) and in between driving times sack groceries at a local family owned grocery store that's within walking distance from my house. And really, what more is there really to want to know about other people than their preference for paper or plastic?

Oh, and I live by this rule, "I'll try anything (within reason) twice." This mostly goes for things like food, (I actually like quail eggs), music (country is torture, but I force myself) and experiences (bungee jumping is actually fun). I don't try things like hitting myself in the head, getting shot or things like that, but everything else is worth trying twice.
