Mostly about Fantasy genre: Special emphasis on Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Deed of Paksennarion. Music, poetry and random ramblings. Actually, anything is up for grabs. Probably not politics, but everything else is fair game. Please ignore al

I got a new Dell laptop a little over a year ago. The computer came with a game consul that allowed me to sample several of their games. I played stuff with penguins, and stuff with jewels. Then, I played FATE. It's a silly little game where you complete quests in a dungeon to gain money, fame and experience. You can learn different kinds of weapons, be a magician, and all kinds of neat, dorky stuff. I was dating a gamer at the time, so I thought this would give me something to talk about.

I bought the game once I was past the demo time and quickly became addicted to the game. It is mindless fun, and fairly entertaining. I finished the final quest (though you can continue past that), retired and created an heir. The game starts all over again, except this time, I passed on a magical item, that gave my heir special skills.

After a while, the game became old. I liked playing, but I hated waiting for my character to get cool. I wanted the cool armor, weapons and toys faster. I wanted my character to kick butt faster, and be stronger sooner. Despite my ex's warnings, I went online and looked up the cheat codes.

I can add gold pieces by the thousands, I can type in "god" and increase my levels by 10. I can type in "philosopher's stone" and the stone appears, ready for me to install in my armor to add special skills. And now, I can't stop cheating.

I've tried to go back and play the game the old way, but I end up cheating every time. I try to keep the cheating to a minimum, but I can't stop. The game is so much more fun when my character is cool, and I don't die every five minutes.

I don't know if this is the nature of gaming, or my own nature. Either way, it's probably not good, but I'll keep it up anyway.

I cheat now and again with games I'm messing around with...I do try and gain the experience of just toughing it out for awhile. I just looked this game up and it looks pretty sweet, so I might have to purchase this.

I love FATE. It's still on my laptop, but it did get boring around dungeon level 35 or so. Maybe I'll try cheating too. Maybe cheating follows a contagious pattern (like violence). ...mmm food for thought.

It's the nature of gaming. I cheat when playing Doom3 or Quake4 - but only when i've had my ass kicked half a dozen times and I don't have the patience to kill my virtual foes honestly. Besides, sometimes it's just fun to powerup in godmode and trash everything with the Invincible Fists of Destruction or the Chainsaw of Vengeance, or even the Booty-kick of Ultimate Irritation.

Cheat. It's good for you. And besides, who knows but you (and now all of JU, of course)?

Zoo: It is a fun game. I wish it had a bit more diversity in character creation, but otherwise I like it. However, my ex told me about a game called "Fable" that he used to play and loved. It's a lot like FATE, but the quests are more creative. Plus, your character, depending on what you do in the game, can become good or evil.

Dr. Guy: I've never been a gamer of any kind. I liked Duck Hunt as a child, but that was about it. They usually stress me out too much to play. I never had the patience to get good at them. But this game kind of drew me in, especially since I was working on my thesis on fantasy lit at the time, and, as I said, I was dating a gamer and I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I haven't found another game since that addicted me, which is for the good.

Dr. Donald: I'm glad someone else plays it. After I started playing, a friend of mine started as well. About a month into playing, we discovered that we both had the game and were spending way too much time on it. Also, if you skip the first 15 levels or so, the game is better -- at least in my opinion. The cooler stuff is in the lower levels. And have you found the cheese hat? I was fishing once and found it in a fish's belly. It was the strangest thing.

Emperor: I was told once that I should not start cheating at the game, because then I would never quite. Turns out they were right. You did remind me though that I used to play Doom that my brother had put on the family computer. I knew the codes of invincibility, the ability to walk through walls and unlimited ammo... took no skill, but it was fun to kill things and not be killed. Too bad there aren't cheat codes for life. And as for JU knowing, no one (other than my brother) actually knows me, so I don't mind if they know I cheat. And Michael (Myrrander) already knows I cheat because he played board games with me when we were kids.

no!...well, now I've definitely got get back to it! Dungeon crawlers are such fun. I enjoy the third person perspective. Yeah, way back there was Diablo and the even more ancient Rogue-like games: Moria, Rognarac and Hack, etcetera, etcetera,..w00t WWW Link
